Flight Experience FAQs

Some commonly asked questions..

A flight experience with Glasgow Flying Club is an amazing experience that not many people get the chance to do for themselves. So, naturally there are a lot of commonly asked questions..

Hopefully this page will answer some that you may have. If not, feel free to get in touch!

Where can we fly?

Whilst we have put together some suggested routes on our web store, we are more than happy (where possible) to be flexible providing that your request is possible within the time restrictions of the purchased voucher.

It’s worth noting that for operational reasons, we may have to alter the route booked. Reasons for this can include weather conditions and temporary local restrictions imposed by Air Traffic Control etc.

Can I take a passenger?

Absolutely! Just make sure you select the additional passenger option when purchasing the voucher.

It’s worth mentioning that any additional passengers cannot participate in the flight – they’ll be in the back seat and there’s no way to swap over.

How old do you need to be?

There’s no clear answer on this. Generally, we suggest that if you’re old enough to sit up front of a car, then you’re old enough to take the controls of a light aircraft.

In our experience, children aged 10 and over are old enough for an experience flight.

In terms of back seat passengers, the minimum age we would generally recommend is 4+

How long is the voucher valid?

Vouchers are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase.

We would suggest not leaving it to the last minute as the great Scottish weather often throws a bit of a spanner in the works and requires bookings be rescheduled.

How should I dress and do I need to bring anything?

All we suggest is that you dress comfortably and bring a jacket ..just in case!

We will provide you with a high viz jacket and a headset so that you can communicate with other passengers and can hear ATC from the commercial jets/other traffic that operate in and near Glasgow AIrport.

Can I take pictures/videos?

Absolutely.

We love seeing your pictures and videos, so be sure to tag us on social media if you do!

How does purchasing/booking work?

When you make a purchase, you are purchasing a flight experience voucher. These vouchers are emailed in PDF format automatically after your purchase has completed. They can be printed if you wish.

Vouchers can be redeemed immediately (if we have availability) or at any point within their 6 month validity period. Whilst vouchers are valid for 6 months, we always recommend booking in sooner rather than later as it’s not uncommon for poor weather to prevent us from having to reschedule a pre-booked experience.

Get in touch with us to arrange your flight – don’t forget to include the voucher number in your email.

What’s next after a Flight Experience?

After a flight experience, many of our guests love the experience and progress to gain a pilots license with our club. As such, some common questions we’re asked are outlined below.

How old do I need to be to gain a pilots license?

You can start logging flights towards a LAPL or PPL license at age 14, but you cannot complete your first solo until you are aged 16 and you can’t hold a license until you at 17 years of age.

How long does it take to get a LAPL or PPL license?

The minimum number of flight time for a LAPL license is currently 35 hours and for a PPL it is 45 hours.

It is worth noting that this is the required minimum number of hours by the CAA and every student is different. For example – a student flying every week is more likely to obtain their license in less time than a student who is flying less frequently. Not just because they’re concentrating it over a shorter period of time, but big gaps between lessons often mean you may have to go over some stuff again as you can get rusty if you’re out of practice.

Hopefully this goes some way to answering some of the questions you may have. We have a wealth of information on our Pilot Training pages, but we would love to hear from you – so, please get in touch with us. if you have any other questions.
